ISPA: 2012 mattress sales were up 11.7%

ISPA’s December 2012 Bedding Barometer, reports year-to-date unit shipments and wholesale revenues increased by 7.6% and 11.7%, respectively, over 2011 levels. Average unit price (AUP) for the year also increased 3.9% over 2011.

The month of December 2012, however, showed a decrease over December 2011 levels, in both unit shipments and wholesale revenues, of 5.9 % and 6.4%, respectively. The December 2012 AUP remained almost flat, decreasing only slightly by 0.5%.

The Bedding Barometer reports U.S. sales activity (including Puerto Rico) for 18 U.S. mattress producers. The participating companies accounted for just over 66% of the mattress units shipped and 75.5% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2011. The experience of these participants as a group does not necessarily reflect those of the entire mattress manufacturing industry. Furthermore, comparisons of Bedding Barometer results for different time periods can be affected by a number of factors, including differences in the number of workdays and holiday promotions in a given month, weather conditions, non-reporting manufacturers entering or exiting the market and other variables.
