Industry components supplier Leggett & Platt Inc., based in Carthage, Mo., has released results of a study it commissioned about sleep surfaces and intimacy that it says shows a consumer preference for hybrid sleep systems.
The “SexySleep” study examined consumer reactions to memory foam mattresses versus what L&P calls the Ultimate Hybrid mattress, made with the company’s Comfort Core fabric-encased innerspring unit and comfort layers of foam, gel or latex.
The study was conducted by market research firm POCO Labs in Milford, Mich., among 255 men and women over the age of 21. Consumers filled out surveys after “sitting, bouncing, laying, crawling and rolling” on two unidentified mattresses—a hybrid model and a memory foam model. Respondents also participated in one-on-one interviews during which they discussed personal experiences with their mattresses.
Among the study findings: 81% considered the L&P Ultimate Hybrid mattress “very” and “most” responsive/comfortable for sleep, 73% described it as “very” and “most” responsive/comfortable for sex. Interestingly, 85% said they did not consider intimacy when making their most recent mattress purchase—and “many” said they now regret that.
