ISPA: U.S. mattress sales rise in April

ISPA logoAccording to the June 5 Bedding Barometer, the latest monthly report on U.S. mattress sales published by the International Sleep Products Association, April 2013 unit sales and the wholesale dollar value of those units both rose by 10.7% and 8.5%, respectively, compared to the same month in 2012. For the same period, the average unit selling price decreased by 2.0%.

The Bedding Barometer reports U.S. sales activity (including Puerto Rico) for *15 U.S. mattress producers. The participating companies accounted for just over 66% of the mattress units shipped and 75.5% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2011. The experience of these participants as a group does not necessarily reflect those of the entire mattress manufacturing industry. Furthermore, comparisons of Bedding Barometer results for different time periods can be affected by a number of factors, including differences in the number of workdays and holiday promotions in a given month, weather conditions, non-reporting manufacturers entering or exiting the market and other variables.

Bedding Barometer subscribers, please note that beginning with this month’s Bedding Barometer, ISPA has added a new page to the report that places the current month’s data into context with data for the preceding two months. As a result, the new chart in the February Bedding Barometer covers the period December 2012 through February 2013. We will include a similar chart in all future issues of Bedding Barometer. Those reports issued at the end of a calendar quarter (that is, March, June, September and December) will separately show value and volume data for innerspring and non-innerspring mattresses. For all other months, the Bedding Barometer will only report aggregate data for all mattresses.
