Foam industry veteran Michael Crowell was named executive director of the nonprofit Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam and its CertiPUR-US polyurethane-foam certification program. He succeeds Robert Duffy, who is retiring.

All major U.S. foam producers offer at least some CertiPUR-US certified foams in their product lines, as do a number of international foamers.

Crowell brings more than 40 years of experience in senior management posts with a number of polyurethane foam suppliers to the job. He has experience in a range of areas, from technical/R&D and manufacturing to sales and marketing.

Most recently, Crowell was vice president of sales and marketing with Flexible Foam Products Inc., where he also had responsibility for regulatory compliance. Prior to that, he was with FXI, the former Foamex International. His career also included management and chemical engineering positions with Firestone Foam Products.

Crowell is well known among members of the foam and bedding industries through his service as a board member of the mattress industry trade group the International Sleep Products Association.

He holds an executive MBA from Michigan State University and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and math from Union University.

“The CertiPUR-US program is growing exponentially,” Crowell said. “I’m excited to work with a program that is contributing value to both the bedding and upholstered furniture industries by providing science-based, credible answers to consumer questions about content and emissions.”
