Mattress manufacturer Sterling Sleep Systems, with headquarters in Garden Grove, California, estimates that its “environmentally friendly,” patented innerspring and specialty-sleep mattress sets with detachable, replaceable components have spared local landfills about 1.1 million cubic feet of solid waste disposal.

Since 2006, the company said it has manufactured and sold more than 20,000 of these “sustainable beds” to hotels, as well as direct to consumers. Customers are able to extend the life of the bed by purchasing new comfort layers and mattress panels from Sterling to replace worn or soiled components.

“The key is to extend end of life by two or three times by replacing only the components like foam and cover systems that wear out far ahead of quality spring systems,” said Tony Hochschild, Sterling president. “Tight quality control is necessary to ensure that interchangeable parts built today fit mattresses built five years ago, and that they will fit the mattresses built in the future. This level of quality assurance is what makes for a great sustainable mattress program. I am dedicated to ensuring that every mattress we build is one I’d personally sleep on myself.”

One longtime customer, the Best Western Plus property in Santa Maria, California, credits its purchase of Sterling’s Imperial collection with significantly reducing mattress waste and costs.

“Sterling (mattresses were) selected by our owner to align with our commitment to creating a sustainable hotel,” said Max Tucker, the hotel’s general manager. “Since we began using them, we have substantially reduced our overhead costs for bedding replacement, which ultimately adds significant savings to our bottom line.”

Sterling Sleep Systems was founded in 1987 and has produced and shipped more than one million mattresses to over 30 countries.
