First Impressions: A Mattress Market Like No Other

Monochromatic, energetic, buzzy, boxed

Las Vegas Market surprises, even me

BY BARBARA T. NELLES

Beth English (managing editor of BedTimes and Sleep Savvy magazines) and I traipsed through Las Vegas Market seeking out mattress and top-of-bed exhibitors–the usual suspects–in our biannual quest to report on new product intros at Las Vegas Market. There’s a full report coming your way in the March print editions of BedTimes and Sleep Savvy magazines.

Meantime, here are a few initial impressions of this show.

Despite a blizzard back east and competing football games Sunday afternoon, you could feel the energy, if not a certain frenzy, in the air. By all reports there were a lot of buyers on the hunt, business up for grabs and new connections being forged.

There also were boxes in the halls and in showrooms, they were just everywhere–but not because showrooms were still setting up:

And there were lots of jazzy showroom redesigns:

South Bay sleek redesign

Dani Serven and Andy Bush proudly posed in South Bay’s sleek new space.

On the mattress border, every shade of gray reigned–with a special emphasis on charcoal.

Susan Mathes of Therapedic proves just how hot charcoal can be as she relaxes on a new Therapedic EcoGel Flex mattress:

Simmons took the mattress industry’s current passion for gray a step further–right to the top of the bed, with this dramatic bed panel on a new Beautyrest Black group:

And Pure Talalay Bliss rebranded, redesigned and relaunched with snow-white sculpted fabrics complemented by deep charcoal walls and accents:

The nifty Palmer bed from Fashion Bed Group by Leggett & Platt mixes light wood and upholstery, but was dressed with a stone gray duvet:

At Kingsdown, King Koil, Serta, Simmons and others there was enough sleep-tracking technology on display to satisfy an entire generation of digital natives (aka Millennials).

Even pillows can chart your every move, as Protect-A-Bed’s Warrick Bell demonstrates:

On adjustable bases at Leggett & Platt, Customatic Adjustable Bedz and Reverie, new models went barless:

There was plenty of news in sleep accessories–and much more to report on in mattress showrooms, so stay tuned for our complete report on Las Vegas Market appearing in March issues of BedTimes and Sleep Savvy and sooner online!
