Better Sleep Month Celebrated with Myriad Activities

Better Sleep Month Celebrated with Myriad ActivitiesNow in its 31st year, “May Is Better Sleep Month,” sponsored by the Better Sleep Council, the consumer-education arm of the International Sleep Products Association, enjoyed another busy and successful public relations campaign this spring. Activities included:

  • Diabetes Influencers Twitter party: For the second year in a row, the BSC kicked off events on May 4 by co-hosting a Twitter party with the Diabetes Influencer Network. About 50 contributors participated; more than a third of them have more than 10,000 followers each. Topics ranged from the sleep environment to the ways diabetes interferes with everyday life. Prizes also were given away. The event reached more than 165,900 individual Twitter accounts.
  • “Mattress Shopping Stressful?” survey: Next, the BSC conducted a survey on what types of activities stress out Americans, from the expected (such as root canals and job interviews) to the seemingly less taxing (like planning a party with friends). Respondents didn’t find mattress shopping to be as stressful as anticipated. (For more, see page 21 of the June issue of BedTimes.)
  • The Better Bed Quizzz: The high point of this year’s promotion was the launch of the Better Bed Quizzz on May 6 through the BSC website and Sleep Savvy, the sister publication of BedTimes. The digital resource guides shoppers through the initial steps of mattress shopping to help them find a bed that meets their individual needs.
  • “Extreme Mattress Shopping” video: To help promote the Better Bed Quizzz, the BSC posted to its YouTube channel an original video, which illustrates what happens when a popular beauty blogger takes mattress shopping to a whole new level.
  • Discussions with Terry Cralle: BSC spokeswoman and certified clinical sleep educator Terry Cralle chatted with CheatSheet.com about the negative effects of watching too much television and the impact it has on sleep health. (Read the article here.) In addition, she gave The Huffington Post a five-point guide to choosing a new mattress. The media group also previewed the Better Bed Quizzz. Finally, Cralle partnered with Hillcrest Children and Family Center in Washington D.C., a nonprofit organization that promotes the well-being of children, youth and families, to promote Better Sleep Month and Mental Awareness Month, also in May. She spoke to a group of mental health professionals about sleep hygiene and the mattress connection, as well as how the Better Bed Quizzz can help consumers select the best mattress for their needs.
