Mattress manufacturer Sleep Inc. has purchased American Bedding Co. in Gainesville, Ga., from owner Tom Mundy.
Among the holdings of the 75-year-old Georgia mattress company are a 60,000-square-foot plant and several proprietary mattress brands, including the high-end Sterling & Thomas collection. The manufacturer has distribution at sizeable Southeastern furniture chains, including Farmers Home Furniture and Kimbrell’s.
“We were impressed with American Bedding’s success in its market and the way they were running their business. They are a strong regional manufacturer with excellent relationships with their customers. This is the kind of success we like to align ourselves with,” said Doug Guffey, president of Sleep Inc., which is based in Corsicana, Texas, and owned by mattress industry veteran Carroll Moran, who also owns Corsicana Bedding.
With the addition of the American Bedding plant, Sleep Inc. now operates five manufacturing facilities and holds licenses to produce three mattress brands—Englander, Spring Air and Therapedic. Sleep Inc. purchased the intellectual property and one plant of the former International Bedding Corp. in January.
Aside from installing new computer systems at the American Bedding facility, Guffey said Sleep Inc. will change little at the new plant. Former owner Mundy is remaining with the company as a consultant and business adviser.
“We’ve been very fortunate with the growth we’ve had in the last six months, and will continue to look at new opportunities as they come our way,” Guffey said.
