High-end mattress producer E.S. Kluft & Co. has received a registered trademark from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the plaid design used on the side border of its Madeline innerspring collection. The bed’s borders are covered in plaid upholstery fabric—not ticking—from Portugal that is hand cut, quilted and sewn. “This trademarked border style is just one more way we’re separating ourselves from the competition,” said Earl Kluft, president and chief executive officer of the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.-based company. “Use of rare and beautiful designer fabrics is almost unheard of in the bedding industry.”
