Mattress maker Serta, with headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Ill., has taken the No. 1 spot in U.S. mattress sales, unseating rival Sealy, according to an annual bedding market share report compiled by industry trade magazine Furniture/Today.
“I am very proud of Serta’s achievement,” said Bob Sherman, Serta president and chief executive officer. “It would not have been possible without our retail partners and employees. There was a lot of hard work getting here—and we had a lot of fun along the way. Now, we remain focused on growing our retailers’ business with a pipeline of innovative products and aggressive advertising programs.”
Serta ended 2011 with U.S. wholesale bedding shipments of $1.163 billion; Sealy chalked up $1.129 billion in U.S. sales, Furniture/Today reported.
Sealy has been No. 1 in units shipped in the United States since the 1970s, according to the publication. Its research, published June 18, places Serta in the No. 1 slot for U.S. bedding shipments. Sealy is No. 2, followed by Simmons at No. 3 and Tempur-Pedic at No. 4.
Serta shipments rose 7.7% in 2010 and then jumped another 18.1% in 2011, according to Furniture/Today. Industry observers attribute much of Serta’s gains to the successful 2011 launch of its specialty sleep collection iComfort, a memory foam and gel mattress that has successfully competed on sales floor with rival Tempur-Pedic.
