Gateway Systems, part of Carthage, Mo.-based Leggett & Platt’s Global Systems Group, is marking its 50th anniversary as a supplier of a complete line of mattress-sewing equipment and tape-edge machines.
Richard Beard and Tony Joyce Sr. founded the U.K.-based company in 1962, and soon after, its machinery sales had grown far beyond Europe. As part of GSG, Gateway machinery is sold around the world.
Gateway’s signature product is the Mattress Master tape-edge machine, introduced in 1990. It combines a tape-edge sewing head with a belt table to speed up a difficult production task and make it more ergonomic, according to the company. The semi-automatic machine rotates the mattress for the operator and incorporates a flipping arm to turn the mattress over for sewing the second side.
