Leggett & Platt moves into gel mattress components

Industry supplier Leggett & Platt Inc. has entered into a licensing agreement with EdiZONE LLC of Alpine, Utah, to manufacture gel-based mattress components. L&P will move gel production to its headquarters in Carthage, Mo.

EdiZONE is the inventor of buckling, pressure-threshold gels—including Intelli-Gel and Ortho-Gel—and a host of patented gel technologies that it licenses for use in a range of products.

L&P has been granted an exclusive license to manufacture and market the gel as a comfort layer in mattresses, after-market toppers and pillows.

“There’s still a lot of growth left for gel sleep products,” said Mark Quinn, L&P segment vice president of marketing. “This product has a pressure-relieving quality that has already been proven in the health care industry. The gel space is so crowded today, but the unique properties of our gel components will stand apart from what is currently out there. The story of this gel is very demonstrable at the point of sale and can be told in seconds, not minutes. We are going to increase production capabilities so we can bring the product to market in a significant way.”

The company expects to introduce its new gel lineup in early 2013.
