Mattress fabric supplier Bekaert Textiles with world headquarters in Waregem, Belgium, has acquired zippered cover and pillow producer Progressive Products Inc. PPI employs 162 at its headquarters and manufacturing plant in Riverside, Calif., and at a second facility in Tijuana, Mexico. Details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1998, PPI supplies sewn covers to a wide range of mattress manufacturers, from majors to independent producers. It also manufactures finished memory-foam pillows, top-of-bed mattress displays and high-end mattress foundations.

Commenting on the deal, PPI founder and Chief Executive Officer Todd Schmidt said, “We have spent a large part of our lives establishing and developing PPI as a leader in innovative zippered mattress covers and high-quality premium pillows. It is clear that the market is evolving with specialty bedding using zippered covers and expected to grow at a rapid pace. The acquisition by Bekaert Textiles will enable PPI to continue to play a leading role in this changing market environment. PPI will take advantage of the many benefits of being part of Bekaert Textiles, the global market leader in mattress fabrics. PPI will continue to design and manufacture original products based on customer specifications, as well as proactively continue to develop products based on market trends and consumer insights.”

Bekaert’s sales expertise, strong support channels and well-rounded product line—together with PPI’s reputation for market credibility, quality and innovation—provide a strong and unique competitive edge and a greater range of services to customers, a news release stated.

“The acquisition of PPI is a significant milestone and underlines our clear commitment to continue to play a leading role in the North American mattress market,” added Dirk Vandeplancke, Bekaert chief executive officer. “PPI has established itself not only as a producer but also as a fulfillment center for customers requesting this service. We will be able to gain access to new market segments, as well as leverage the Bekaert footprint to better service our customers. This is an important strategic step to further strengthen our market leadership.”
