THE PROCESS OF MATTRESS DISPOSAL IS EVOLVING AS NEW LAWS ARE ENACTED
ISPA To Conduct A Mattress Recycling Developments Education Session

(Alexandria, VA) – The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) will conduct an industry educational session on Tuesday, July 30, from 3:00 – 4:00pm in the World Center Forum, Building B, 16th floor in Las Vegas, Nevada to discuss recent and pending state legislation that will change how used mattresses are recycled.

ISPA President Ryan Trainer will discuss how new laws enacted in Connecticut and Rhode Island will affect retailers, manufacturers, consumers and others that handle discarded mattresses. “The mattress industry has grappled with the challenge of efficiently recycling a used mattress for over 20 years. The new state recycling laws will help fund a process that will put into practice what we have learned through this work,” Trainer said. “Strong grassroots support from the industry – through calls and letters to elected officials – has been critical to ISPA’s push to enact practical common sense laws. Our next challenge will be working with retailers, recyclers, government officials and the industry to implement the legislation that now has been signed into law.”

In addition, Shelly Sullivan, spokesperson for Californians for Mattress Recycling, will update attendees about the progress of mattress recycling legislation in California. An industry-supported bill has passed the California Senate, and will be considered by the Assembly in August. Continuing member support and contacts with key state legislators in California will be important in this last phase of the legislative process.

“This is a must attend session for manufacturers and retailers that are involved with or concerned about recycling, especially for those companies doing business in Connecticut, Rhode Island and California,” added Trainer. “Other states have indicated interest in enacting similar laws in 2014. Learn about the progress we have achieved so far and the important work that remains. Get your questions answered and find out how you can be part of the solution.”
