People who suffer from restless leg syndrome don’t look forward to bedtime. The burning, prickly sensation associated with RLS is relieved by moving the legs, which affects a good night’s sleep.
For years, medication was the only treatment, but scientists have discovered that pneumatic compression devices designed to prevent deep vein thrombosis work miracles for those with RLS. The devices inflate for a few seconds every minute, delivering intermittent pressure to the legs, stimulating nerves and muscles, and improving circulation.
Researchers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center found that after one month of using the devices, not only did patients have less severe symptoms, they also were less fatigued, slept better and had better dispositions. One-half had a complete resolution of symptoms, and one-third stopped taking medication.
