Houston-based retailer Mattress Firm Inc. has named industry veteran Roger Magowitz as executive director of the nonprofit Mattress Firm Foundation. Magowitz has served as the organization’s charitable advisor since 2011, when the foundation turned its focus to raising awareness and funding research of pancreatic cancer. Magowitz also is the 2001 founder of an organization with a similar mission, the Seena Magowitz Foundation, named for his mother who died from pancreatic cancer in 2001.

“Roger has made finding a cure for pancreatic cancer his life’s mission,” said Steve Stagner, Mattress Firm chief executive officer and foundation board member. “He passionately pursues every opportunity to raise much-needed awareness. His unwavering dedication has not only united an industry, but it has also provided TGen (Translational Genomics Research Institute) with funding for clinical trials that have resulted in several breakthroughs. I am amazed by his conviction and look forward to having his leadership at the Mattress Firm Foundation.”

The Mattress Firm Foundation has raised more than $500,000 to date for the Pancreatic Cancer Program at TGen. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer death in the United States and annually takes the lives of more than 38,000 Americans.
