SSA rolls out Bedfax labeling program for mattress contents

The Specialty Sleep Association introduced a new Bedfax labeling program at the winter Las Vegas Market Jan. 26-30. The voluntary program provides third-party content verification and labeling for all mattresses and is offered in tandem with the SSA Environmental & Safety Program, a four-level labeling program for mattress manufacturers who wish to have third-party verification of their environmental product claims.

Both Spring Air and Suite Sleep rolled out the new Bedfax labels on a collection of products during the market. Spring Air also participates in the SSA Environmental & Safety Program along with other mattress makers, including Boyd Specialty Sleep, Innomax, Naturepedic and Paramount Sleep.

Under the new program, mattress manufacturers are able to place a label “declaring the ingredients or contents of a mattress (has been verified) and to say to the consumer that this mattress is offering full disclosure of contents, and there is paperwork on file with the SSA,” said Dale Read, SSA president. “Consumers can access this information through the SSA or at www.bedfax.org.”

The SSA also advises all manufacturers and retailers who wish to make green claims such as “organic,” “bio-based,” “natural,” etc., to review the Federal Trade Commission’s Green Guides.
