Sam Woods was promoted to fill Murphy’s prior role of executive vice president of sales and operations. In addition, Kindel Elam was named executive vice president and general counsel.

Murphy has more than 15 years with Mattress Firm, becoming executive vice president of sales and operations in 2010. Prior to that, he held a number of posts, including regional vice president of sales, vice president of field and talent management, director of training and recruiting and several field management positions.

Woods, who joined Mattress Firm 17 years ago as a franchisee, most recently was divisional vice president of sales and operations. Since 2000, after selling his franchise back to Mattress Firm, Woods has held a variety of posts with the company, including district sales manager, regional sales manager and regional vice president of sales.

Elam, whose previous title was vice president and general counsel, has been with the company since 2012.

“There’s nothing more important to Mattress Firm than a strong executive management team that can lead the organization through continued growth and innovation,” said Steve Stagner, Mattress Firm president and chief executive officer. “Ken, Sam and Kindel are committed and capable leaders that have made a lasting, positive impact on the company. I am confident they will continue to strengthen our operations and grow the organization to the first national specialty bedding retailer reaching border to border and coast to coast.”

The sleep shop chain’s current storefront tally tops 1,300 locations in 33 states.
