The International Sleep Products Association released the following findings in its September Bedding Barometer (paywall), which measures the monthly, quarterly and year-to-date performance of the mattress industry based on *U.S. sales activity of 14 domestic bed brands. Unit sales of mattresses and foundations grew 8.7% in September, as compared with the same month in 2013. The wholesale dollar value of mattresses and foundations sold rose 16%.
The average unit selling price of mattresses and foundations increased 6.7%, as compared with September 2013.
Third-quarter sales and wholesale revenues increased 3.3% and 8%, respectively, and AUP was up 4.6%.
Year-to-date sales rose 1.6% and the wholesale dollar value of those sales increased 6.7%, as compared with the same prior-year period. Year-to-date AUP was up 4.0%.
The ISPA Bedding Barometer also reports data on innerspring and non-innerspring mattress sales.
* Participating companies account for 70.1% of mattress units shipped and 78.2% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2013. The experience of these participants as a group does not necessarily reflect those of the entire mattress-manufacturing industry. Comparisons of Bedding Barometer results for different time periods can be affected by a number of factors, including differences in the number of workdays and holiday promotions in a given month, weather conditions, nonreporting manufacturers entering or exiting the market and other variables.
