Mattress Firm raises funds for pancreatic cancer research

Retailer Mattress Firm announced in November, National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, that it is committed to raising $1 million for earlier detection and treatment of the disease through its Mattress Firm Foundation.

“We hope to help raise awareness of this deadly and complex disease,” said Steve Stagner, Mattress Firm president and chief executive officer. “Many of our team members have been personally touched by the disease and lost loved ones, and we dream it’s possible to extend the lives of our friends and loved ones through our funding and awareness-building programs. It used to be that only 4% of people with pancreatic cancer would live to survive another birthday. Now, thanks to clinical trials, 40% are living to see another year.”

Funds raised will support imaging research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona. New imaging methods may allow for earlier and more accurate detection of pancreatic cancer before it metastasizes.

Mattress Firms customers were able to donate to the cause through a “round up for pancreatic cancer” fundraiser at the point of sale, when they were invited to round up their purchase to the nearest $1, $10 or $100. In addition, Mattress Firm employees across the country participated in local fundraising events for pancreatic cancer research.
