Former Spears Mattress purchased by Southerland

All assets of regional mattress manufacturer Advanced Sleep Concepts have been purchased by Southerland Mattress, based in Nashville, Tennessee, according to the Rome News-Tribune. Advanced Sleep was an Englander licensee founded in 1973 in Rome, Georgia, as Spears Mattress Co. by Terry and Ed Spears. Later, brother Gene also entered the family-owned business.

According to the news story, Advanced Sleep was purchased out of foreclosure in September 2014 by 195 Chatillon LLC, a firm based in Elmhurst, Illinois. Terms of the subsequent sale to Southerland were not disclosed.

Southerland is expected to move manufacturing of the Englander brand to its Tennessee facility.

“We are very excited that Southerland has joined our Englander group,” said Kevin Toman, president and chief executive officer of Olive Branch, Mississippi-based Englander. “Southerland’s acquisition of Englander Southeast brings a strong company rich in history and bedding acumen to our already vibrant company.”

A 2006 Spears Mattress profile in BedTimes describes the once-thriving regional manufacturer as having launched a successful “Mattress Max” gallery program in 2001, which grew to 120 independent retailers carrying Spears beds, exclusively. In addition, Terry Spears served as chairman of the committee that ran the Englander brand when the seven Englander licensees joined forces in 2005 to purchase the name and trademark from La-Z-Boy.
