Robert “Bill” Evans, a retired field service technician for machinery supplier Leggett & Platt Global Systems Group, died March 7 in Clarendon County, South Carolina. He was 73.

Evans’ long career in sewing machinery spanned more than 40 years, half of which he spent with L&P GSG’s Porter International, traveling to customer plants around the world, installing and repairing sewing equipment and training machinery operators. Throughout his career, he won numerous performance awards and was active in several industrial associations.

During Evans’ time with Porter, many industry colleagues grew to love and respect him for his thorough machine knowledge and his patient guidance in training customers and operators, an L&P spokesman said.

Evans was a veteran who served in the South Carolina Army National Guard. He also was a Mason. In addition to traveling, he was a lover of the outdoors and enjoyed many leisure pursuits, from hunting and fishing, to sports, to gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years Mary Alice, daughters Pamela Evans and Carla Evans Lovi, and son-in-law Rob Lovi.
