ISPA Releases 2018 Mattress Industry Trends Report

ISPA Mattress Industry Trends Report 2018As part of the International Sleep Products Association’s effort to provide a broader outlook for the bedding industry and to account for the growing importance of mattress imports in the U.S. mattress market in recent years, the 2018 Mattress Industry Trends Report, released in May, implements several important enhancements.

“The products sold in the U.S. mattress market continue to evolve and the sources of those products are changing,” said ISPA President Ryan Trainer. “The 2018 report reflects efforts to work with industry participants and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to collect relevant data and to present that information in formats that are easier for our members to use.”

Specifically, the 2018 report now includes combined U.S. market data for mattresses and foundations (including not only traditional stationary foundations, but also foldable and motion foundations) that are produced in the United States and imported. Historically, ISPA separately reported U.S.-produced bedding and imports.

Based on this new perspective, the report estimates that U.S. sales of mattresses and stationary foundations from all sources (including imports) grew modestly in 2018. However, unit shipments and the value of U.S.-made products continued a two-year decline, falling below 2016 levels. Compared with 2017, U.S. mattress producers shipped 2.4% fewer units in 2018, valued at $8.3 billion.

The average unit price for all U.S.-produced mattresses and stationary foundations increased modestly in 2018, compared with 2017, while mattress prices decreased and stationary foundation prices posted an increase.

The 2018 report also combines data for all imported products into one chart, allowing readers to analyze all imported products (including mattresses, traditional stationary foundations, foundations with legs, foldable foundations with legs and motion foundations) at the same time. Finally, ISPA added an infographic that allows readers to see year-over-year changes in the industry at a glance.

“An important way that ISPA adds value for the U.S. industry is to work with customs to improve the quality of official import data collected and published by the federal government,” Trainer said. “As a result of these efforts, our published data for both the total U.S. market and imports is more accurate and relevant to our members’ needs. ISPA will continue to identify ways to improve the market data we publish.”
