SGS North America Inc., based in Deer Park, Texas, has expanded its mattress-testing services at its Farmingdale, New York, facility. The addition of new equipment enables SGS to offer Cornell impact testing and roller testing, making the 15,000-square-foot site a one-stop testing provider for mattress manufacturers, the company said.
“Sleep products have always been a core aspect of our service, and we are delighted to expand our testing capability to support an industry that affects all of our lives,” said Bobby Brown, SGS North America director of operations. “To consumers around the world, we believe it’s only trusted because it’s tested.”
The company offers complete mattress testing services covering these key areas — chemical testing, finish testing, electrical safety testing, flammability testing, mechanical testing, product performance testing and textile testing.
Chemical testing is available for all components, including foams, to determine the presence of any restricted substances.
Product performance testing considers real-world mattress use and may include comparison testing, fit-for-use testing, as well foam compression, density and deflection properties.
Electrical safety and performance testing is available for all electrical components in adjustable bases and other types of mattresses and beds using electrical power.
Textile testing includes durability and abrasion testing of ticking to measure pilling, tear and tensile strength. Fabric finishes can be tested for their purported stain resistance, color-fastness and other attributes.
