Bedding Veteran Muenkel Departs Resident

Bob Muenkel

Bob Muenkel, vice president of retail engagement at Resident, has left the company after a three-year stint with the digitally native mattress brand

Muenkel, a high-profile figure in the bedding industry for years, said he left the company in a workforce reduction. “I am now a free agent,” he said on social media.

“I want to personally thank the team at Resident (too many names to name) for their professionalism, dedication, and inspiration in building a one-billion-dollar powerhouse in just six years,” he wrote. “We worked fast, we worked hard, we worked tirelessly through many challenges, and despite ourselves and all the mistakes we made, we persevered and prospered.”

Muenkel said he has seen “countless” workforce reductions in his 34 years in the bedding industry and “somehow avoided all of them. Yesterday,” he added, “I was not so fortunate.”

Bob McCarthy, managing director of retail at Resident, said Muenkel played a key role in Resident’s growth. “Bob was an integral part of our growth at Resident in the retail channel,” McCarthy said. “He was a great teammate and we wish him the best of luck in his next role.”

Before joining Resident in July of 2019, Muenkel was director of sales education and development at Serta Simmons Bedding for three years. Before that, he was director of sales education and development at Serta International for six years.

He joined Serta from Furniture First, where he was director of mattresses/new membership from 2007 to 2010. Muenkel has been a speaker at a number of industry events over the years.
