A new mattress recycling bill in New York (S 1463) removes the consumer-funded model that works in California, Connecticut and Rhode Island — and unfairly shifts costs to U.S. manufacturers.
ISPA and MRC President Alison Keane explains the stakes, the surprise move in the New York Senate and how your voice can help. The bill will be reconsidered next week, and we need all hands on deck to oppose it or push for amendments.

Hi everybody, this is Alison Keane, President of MRC and ISPA. I’m here to talk to you today about mattress recycling legislation, specifically in New York. So here’s what you need to know now. We have mattress recycling legislation in New York. We had a little bit of a surprise and it was brought to the floor of the Senate yesterday. So hopefully you got the member alert to take action.
The good news is if you didn’t take action yesterday, we still have time. The bill was laid over, so it’s not going to be heard again until next week. So let’s use this next week, this week, and early next week to let the senators in New York know something very important. This bill will not enable us to bring good mattress recycling, the MRC program, in a successful way to New York. But this is not “we want to defeat this bill.” This is “we want to amend this bill so that it does enable us to bring good Mattress Recycling Council program to a program to the state.” We really want New York, but the way the bill is written right now, it wouldn’t allow us to do that.
So we have very simple, clear amendments that we’re offering, and we need the State Senate to take them up. So please, if you have the insider, go ahead, cut and paste the state senate email addresses and send them either the floor alert that we attached, or if you want to do some bullet points based on our full testimony please do that hey we can we can write you a company form letter that you can put on your letterhead. We have that already. Whatever you need to do.
If you didn’t get the insider, let me know, and I’ll give you all that information. It is very, very easy to take action. We really need to hit a home run here and say we want good Mattress Recycling Council legislation to enable us to do a successful program in New York State. It’s not that hard. Help us make it happen. Thank you.
