As sustainability expectations continue to evolve, industries are facing growing pressure from regulators, consumers, retailers, and other stakeholders to better understand and address the environmental impact of their processes and products. To help the mattress industry navigate these challenges, the International Sleep Products Association has focused its sustainability efforts on education, collaboration, practical tools, and regulatory preparedness.
The most recent addition to ISPA’s sustainability resources is a mattress industry value chain map assessment. Developed through a partnership between ISPA and Purdue University’s School of Sustainability Engineering and Environmental Engineering, the assessment provides a comprehensive view of the mattress value chain. It identifies key stakeholders, environmental impacts, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. As part of a two-semester capstone project, senior environmental engineering students conducted the assessment under the guidance of ISPA, helping to establish a foundation for future industry resources, collaboration, and sustainability initiatives.
The assessment identified several important insights that can help guide the industry’s sustainability efforts moving forward:
- The greatest opportunities for environmental improvement lie upstream in the value chain. Raw materials and component production were found to drive most mattress-related environmental impact, making material innovation and supplier engagement key opportunities.
- Sustainability is increasingly being embedded in business priorities across the industry. Waste diversion, recycling, energy efficiency, and regulatory preparedness emerged as common priorities among suppliers, manufacturers, and recyclers.
- Consumer expectations continue to be a powerful catalyst for action. Customer demand, brand reputation, and market competitiveness are increasingly influencing sustainability investments and decision-making.
- Circularity represents one of the industry’s most significant opportunities. The assessment found that recycled materials, design-for-disassembly, and stronger recycler partnerships can improve material recovery and support circular business models.
- Improved supply chain visibility can accelerate progress. Greater transparency and more consistent sustainability data can help companies better understand, manage, and communicate environmental effects throughout the value chain.
- Innovation is creating new pathways for improvement. Emerging technologies, sustainable materials, digital traceability, and circular design solutions are expanding opportunities to reduce negative effects on the environment.
- Collaboration will be critical to long-term success. Meaningful progress will require engagement and coordination across the entire mattress value chain.
- Practical tools can help companies advance at their own pace. Resources such as sustainability maturity models, supplier data platforms, life-cycle assessment tools, traceability solutions, and circularity frameworks can help companies benchmark progress, identify priorities, improve decision-making, and drive continuous improvement.
ISPA has already begun taking steps to address many of these opportunities. The annual ISPA Sustainability Conference—to be held Sept. 23–24 this year—brings together manufacturers, suppliers, recyclers, retailers, researchers, and sustainability experts to share best practices and explore topics such as circularity, sustainable materials, recycling technologies, digital traceability, and regulatory developments. ISPA also fosters collaboration through its Sustainability Committee and various industry workgroups, creating opportunities for stakeholders across the value chain to engage, share knowledge, and advance industry solutions.
Through its growing portfolio of sustainability initiatives, ISPA is also developing practical resources to help members respond to increasing customer and regulatory expectations. A recent addition is a voluntary sustainability supplier survey designed to streamline sustainability information requests, reduce reporting burdens, and improve consistency across the value chain. The survey is intended to support sustainability maturity efforts by helping companies identify data gaps, benchmark practices, and better understand evolving expectations. It will soon be available on the ISPA website.
Additional resources under development include sustainability guidance documents, educational programming, and tools that can help companies better understand their sustainability maturity and identify opportunities for improvement. ISPA’s goal is to help companies better understand their impact, strengthen sustainability programs, and prepare for emerging requirements.
By focusing on value chain collaboration, improved transparency, circularity, and practical implementation tools, ISPA is helping to position the industry to advance sustainability to meet evolving environmental, market, and regulatory expectations. Collectively, the findings from the value chain map assessment suggest that the mattress industry has a strong foundation upon which to build.
