Naturepedic, an organic mattress and bedding company based in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, has earned UL Environmental Claim Validation for non-detectable levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals in its crib and children’s mattresses.
According to a news release, the UL 2884 Environmental Claim Validation Procedure for Substance Content Claims by UL Solutions — a global leader in applied safety science — is a rigorous scientific analysis and review that tests for approximately 80 PFAS compounds against globally accepted standards.
“We’re not just testing for harmful chemicals — we’re redefining what safe sleep should be,” said Arin Schultz, chief growth officer at Naturepedic. “Parents deserve better options and the peace of mind that comes from knowing their children are sleeping on something truly safe. After years of pioneering safer waterproofing alternatives, we are proud to have irrefutable scientific validation to lead the sleep industry in verified non-detectable PFAS.”
Used as waterproofing treatment for products including children’s mattresses, PFAS — commonly known as “forever chemicals” — do not break down in the environment and are linked to health risks including hormonal disruption, developmental delays in children, increased cancer risk, fertility issues, immune system suppression and liver and kidney damage. State governments are also recognizing and acting on the dangers of these chemicals: New Jersey just announced a historic environmental settlement with major chemical manufacturers to address decades of PFAS contamination; a judge ordered a halt to PFAS discharged into the Ohio River; and Pennsylvania legislators and firefighters are supporting a bill to ban the chemicals.
According to Naturepedic, it is the first-to-market mattress brand verified by UL Solutions to avoid PFAS. The new validation confirms that its products meet the stringent non-detectable PFAS threshold of less than 50 parts per million of total fluorine — an indicator of PFAS — using recognized industry methods. To earn this independent validation, Naturepedic provided detailed documentation about its materials, suppliers, manufacturing processes and quality controls. The company also chose to have optional testing done by another independent lab for more than 250 PFAS chemicals, with every one measuring far below even the strictest limits.
“Achieving an Environmental Claim Validation for non-detectable PFAS from UL Solutions demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and transparency in manufacturing,” said Ranee Valles, director and general manager of product sustainability at UL Solutions. “Relying on UL Solutions’ rigorous third-party testing highlights dedication to product integrity and safety, providing consumers with clear, verifiable information to guide their decisions. We appreciate the opportunity to support this milestone and look forward to advancing further innovations in environmental performance.”
Naturepedic is one of the longest-standing Global Organic Textile Standard-certified mattress brands and the first mattress brand to earn an Environmental Working Group Verified certification. The company is now beginning the UL validation process for its adult mattress line, the news release said.
