Diamond Needle named distributor for EMCO parts and supplies

Quilting machine producer Edgewater Machine Co., which is in the process of closing down operations, has named Diamond Needle Corp. the exclusive distributor for all EMCO parts and supplies.

Under the terms of the deal, Carlstadt, New Jersey-based Diamond Needle will handle the sale and distribution of machine parts, supplies and literature for all the machines formerly designed and manufactured by EMCO.

Founded in 1944 by Kurt Schlegel, EMCO has been led since 1989 by Roy Schlegel, Kurt’s son. After nearly 30 years at the helm, Roy Schlegel said he has opted to retire and shutter EMCO in response to the decline in demand for quilting machines that has occurred in recent years.

“The bedding business has changed,” he said, “and mattress manufacturers have redesigned their lines in a way that requires much less quilting. With business slowing, I realized that now is a good time to call it quits.”

Last summer, College Point, New York-based EMCO auctioned off all its production equipment. In addition, the company sold its remaining quilting machines. Now, with the signing of a distribution agreement with Diamond Needle, Schlegel is in the process of completing EMCO’s closure.

“I’ve been holding off on shutting our doors until we found a reputable company that was in a good position to service our customers with parts and supplies,” Schlegel said. “Our machines have been popular worldwide for nearly 75 years, and we didn’t want to close our business without having a way for our loyal customers to keep their machines running.”

As part of the deal, Diamond Needle has acquired all the parts, blueprints, molds and technical details necessary to supply EMCO parts on a continuing basis. It also acquired the company’s existing parts inventory.

“We’re happy to announce that EMCO machine owners will be able to experience many more years of productivity with their machines,” said Abe Silberstein, president of Diamond Needle. “We’ll draw on our national and worldwide resources to manufacture, procure and contract the production of quality replacement parts and supplies for the entire EMCO line.”

EMCO’s machines are known for being highly durable and easy to maintain, Silberstein added. “The company has a very loyal customer base throughout the bedding industry that depends on these machines,” he said.

Founded in 1951, Diamond Needle is one of the world’s largest distributors of sewing machine needles, as well as sewing machine parts, cutting machine parts and related supplies. The company ships orders within 24 hours from its warehouse in Carlstadt.
