Factory-direct manufacturer Beds By Design has changed its name to Harbor Springs Mattress Co. The 10-year-old company is based in Harbor Springs, Michigan, and was founded by owners Rory Karpathian and Dar Charlebois.
“The reason for the name change is that some people were confused about what we actually made,” Karpathian said. “The new name also reflects our pride in being a small company making handcrafted mattress in Harbor Springs.”
Karpathian is a former plant manager who worked for major manufacturers before deciding to start his own business. His goal was to offer high-quality, hand-tufted beds with at least a 25-year life span.
“I used to manage a 100,000-square-foot facility that produced 1,500 mattresses a day,” he said. “Now I run a 12,000-square-foot facility that produces less than five a day.”
Harbor Springs Mattress operates three retail stores across the state: one at its manufacturing headquarters, one in Rochester and a third in Suttons Bay.
The showroom at its plant has a view into the mattress production area where visitors can watch their mattresses being made.
“We use Michigan wool, pure cotton and all-natural latex,” Karpathian said. “Our craftsmen take the time to hand cut, hand layer, hand tuft and hand sew each bed.”
