Independent mattress manufacturer Southerland Inc. has appointed Michael Prude executive vice president of operations. The Nashville, Tennessee-based company announced separately that due to a surge in orders, it also is expanding its entire workforce by 10%. The manufacturer is hiring customer service, quality control and shipping staff, as well as filling a number of roles in its trucking division Southerland Transport.

Prude reports to Bryan Smith, Southerland president and chief executive officer. He oversees day-to-day operations and supply chain management of the company’s six U.S. plants.

He is an industry veteran who joins Southerland following 18 years with Serta Simmons Bedding LLC. Most recently, he managed 11 SSB factories in the South.

“Mike is one of the most experienced professionals on the operations side of our business, and we welcome his vision and leadership into our organization as we continue to strengthen our national manufacturing footprint,” Smith said.

Commenting on his new post, Prude said: “Southerland has built a great reputation for being one of the premier independent producers in the country, bringing exceptional quality, service and value to its customers. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with a highly regarded leadership team to help the business reach new milestones.”
