ISPA Updates the Q4 2020 Bedding Market Quarterly

This revised issue of the Bedding Market Quarterly (login required, free to members) shows that for the fourth quarter of 2020, total unit shipments of mattresses, stationary and motion foundations from U.S. producers and imports were 5% above comparable data for 2019, and the value of those units were also up 8% year over year. Year-to-date data shows that units and dollars were up 4% and 4.1% respectively.

Turning to the total for reported U.S.-produced mattresses and stationary foundations, unit shipments were 1.8% below the level of sales for the same period in 2019, while the wholesale value of those shipments were 4.1% above last year, resulting in the fourth quarter 2020 average unit price being 5.9% above fourth quarter 2019. The year-to-date data shows that units and dollars were down 5.7% and 2.7% respectively, while average unit selling price was 3.2% above the same period of 2019.

Looking solely at total mattress shipments (U.S.-produced plus imports), the data show that units were 3.6% higher during fourth quarter 2020 compared with a year ago and are up 7.5% on a year-to-date basis. Comparable data for dollar value were up 4.2% for the quarter and up 2.2% for the year.

Members of the International Sleep Products Association are encouraged to read several notes added to this quarterly report that explain changes to the presentation of imported foldable foundations resulting from changes by Customs to how these products are classified at the time of importation, concerns we have with official import statistics for motion foundations and changes to 2019 data for U.S. motion sales.

The Bedding Market Quarterly reports U.S. sales activity (including Puerto Rico) based on data provided to ISPA by 14 U.S. mattress producers. The participating companies accounted for 54.2% of the mattress units shipped and 69.5% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2019. The experience of these participants as a group does not necessarily reflect those of the entire mattress manufacturing industry. Furthermore, comparisons of Bedding Market Quarterly results for different time periods can be affected by a number of factors, including differences in the number of workdays and holiday promotions in a given quarter, weather conditions, etc.
