Covestro, a supplier of high-tech polymer materials with U.S. headquarters in Pittsburgh, has acquired the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification PLUS certification for its site in South Charleston, West Virginia.
The site specializes in the production of base polyether polyols and polymer polyols. These materials are used in a wide range of applications, including mattresses, furniture, automotive seating and more. The certification follows the ISCC PLUS certifications of other Covestro facilities in the United States, including South Deerfield, Massachusetts; Newark, Ohio; and Baytown, Texas. According to a news release, this achievement reinforces Covestro’s commitment to sustainability and enables the certification of products made from recycled and bio-attributed raw materials.
“This certification marks another milestone in our journey towards a circular economy and sustainable production,” said Barbara Buck, vice president and site manager of Covestro’s South Charleston facility. “It enables us to offer high performance products that help reduce our customer’s carbon footprint.”
The South Charleston site’s certification expands Covestro’s capability to provide sustainable solutions across its product portfolio, including Hyperlite CQ products, the release said. Covestro’s CQ product line, which stands for “Circular Intelligence,” is made up of products with at least 25% alternative raw materials derived from biomass or recycled plastics.
ISCC is an internationally recognized sustainability certification for biomass and bioenergy. The standard covers all stages of the value chain and is used worldwide. Covestro has major sites across all regions that are ISCC PLUS certified, including Antwerp, Belgium; Dormagen, Krefeld-Uerdingen and Leverkusen, Germany; Map Ta Phut, Thailand; and Shanghai.
