The International Sleep Products Association is calling on the entire mattress industry to participate in an important new sustainability project—one that will only be as strong as the collective insight behind it.
ISPA has partnered with the Purdue University School of Sustainability Engineering and Environmental Engineering within the Environmental and Ecological Engineering program to develop a comprehensive value chain map assessment for the mattress industry. This project is being completed by EEE seniors as part of their capstone design requirement, giving our industry a unique opportunity to benefit from fresh academic expertise while helping to shape a tool that will guide future sustain-ability efforts.
For this assessment, Purdue students are mapping inputs and outputs across the mattress value chain. Their work will highlight where sustainability risks and opportunities are concentrated, identify areas where the industry can reduce its environmental footprint, and uncover opportunities for ISPA to support meaningful progress.
A project guided by ISPA’s Sustainability Committee
This initiative is strongly supported by ISPA’s Sustainability Committee—a diverse group of bedding suppliers and manufacturers who advise the ISPA Board of Trustees on policies and actions that advance sustainability across the sleep products industry. The committee has been deeply engaged in shaping this project and emphasizes that broad industry participation is essential. Without robust input from manufacturers, suppliers, and recyclers, the resulting value chain map will not fully reflect the realities and opportunities within our sector.
Your participation is critical
To ensure the assessment is accurate and valuable, Purdue students have created tailored surveys for different segments of the industry:

The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Every response strengthens the final resource and directly contributes to the industry’s ability to advance sustainability in a coordinated, data-driven way. The Sustainability Committee urges all companies—large and small—to participate. The more voices represented, the more powerful and actionable this value chain map will be.
