MITR Shows Mattress Manufacturers Maintaining Value Despite Shipment Declines

Key takeaways from the International Sleep Products Association’s 2026 “Mattress Industry Trends Report,” or MITR, indicate that demand remains under pressure, with unit declines significantly outpacing value declines; that pricing and mix continue to support revenue, despite lower shipment volumes; and that foundations are the most affected category, reflecting changes in purchasing behavior.

But there’s one notable exception: Adjustable bases show relative resilience amid broader market softness.

This year’s report, a comprehensive analysis of the U.S. mattress market and the economic forces shaping industry performance, notes that while the market continued to contract in 2025, manufacturers maintained pricing discipline and product mix, helping offset declines in shipment volume. Total U.S. mattress market value declined 6.5% year over year, while unit shipments fell 13.2%, underscoring continued softness in consumer demand.  The report also identifies significant shifts in shipment volume, product mix, regional performance, imports and exports, and pricing trends.

“Looking beyond the headline numbers, the data shows a market where value proved more resilient than unit demand,” says Mary Thorpe, director of industry research and analytics at ISPA. “Unit demand remained under pressure in 2025, but pricing discipline and product mix helped limit the decline in dollar value. Manufacturers largely maintained pricing despite lower volumes, while a shift toward larger mattress sizes contributed to higher average unit values. Together, these trends offer important insight into how the industry is responding to a cautious consumer environment.”

The report highlights several findings:

  • Average selling prices increased despite lower unit shipments, reflecting continued pricing discipline and favorable product mix.
  • Foundations experienced the sharpest declines across both domestic production and imports.
  • Adjustable bases remained comparatively resilient, signaling continued consumer interest in premium sleep products.
  • Domestic shipments declined across every U.S. region, and imports also softened, suggesting broad-based demand weakness rather than sourcing shifts.

The MITR serves as one of the industry’s most comprehensive benchmarking resources, offering executives, analysts, and business leaders detailed market intelligence to support strategic planning, forecasting, investment decisions, and competitive analysis.

“The current environment reinforces the importance of relying on objective market data rather than anecdotal trends,” Thorpe adds. “Understanding why value declined less than units helps put the market’s performance into proper context and provides a clearer view of underlying trends shaping business decisions across the industry.”
