Nightcap Q&A With Mike Juoni

Mike Juoni

Mike Juoni is the Senior Vice President of Sales
for Diamond Mattress and spends more than 120 days a year traveling. He’s also a father of three, and while his kids were growing up, he loved watching them play sports. Now that they’ve graduated high school, gotten married and moved on, Juoni says he and his wife attend Milwaukee Bucks games whenever they can and enjoy watching player Giannis Antetokounmpo in action. The following is our Nightcap Q&A With Mike Juoni.

BedTimes: Tell us about your bedtime routine.

Mike Juoni: I have a very consistent routine that’s very boring but helps me unwind, even with more than 120 nights a year on the road. I brush and floss, wash my face and get my things ready for the next day. Then I read every night as a way to slow down my mind and unwind to fall asleep.

BT: How many hours do you typically sleep? What’s the minimum you need to function?

MJ: I am an eight hour per night sleeper for sure. I sometimes get less due to travel schedules but am fairly consistent at seven to eight hours per night.

BT: Pets in the bed – yay or nay?

MJ: Boots, our youngest daughter’s 3-year-old cat, has really become our cat while she’s away at school. Boots definitely runs our home and sleeps by our feet each night.

BT: Barefoot or socks?

MJ: I’m on team barefoot. Except for those really cold Wisconsin nights, I might switch it up and find some thick socks for bed.

BT: What’s on your nightstand?

MJ: I always have some water and whatever I’m reading. I mentioned this during the Nightcap Q&A With Mike Juoni session.

BT: What is the best sleep product that you own and why?

MJ: I’ve found that my simple Garmin bracelet has personally helped me sleep better. I use it to track sleep trends and the gentle vibration alarm on my wrist versus a loud alarm clock was a game changer for me. I sleep more peacefully knowing that’s how I’ll be woken up in the morning. It has been a valuable tool that I discussed in the Nightcap Q&A With Mike Juoni.

BT: What are your best sleep tips?

MJ: I’m sure everyone is different but the very consistent process of getting ready for bed and then reading has allowed me to sleep well across time zones, in different hotels, and at home.

BT: Where is the last place you got a great night’s sleep that wasn’t your house and what made it great?

MJ:  Probably toward the end of my stay at Vegas market. The room was quiet, the shades allowed for a totally dark environment, the temperature was great, and the bed and pillows were comfortable. Plus, I’m sure I was exhausted from a great market.

BT: What are your secrets for getting a good night’s sleep while traveling?

MJ:  My boring routine again.

BT: What do you do when you have insomnia?

MJ:  It’s very rare that my routine won’t allow me to sleep. If I wake up and can’t sleep and reading won’t put me back to sleep mode, I will generally just get up and go to another space — a comfortable recliner, for example.

BT: Let’s play a game of “Would You Rather?” Sleep mask or sound machine?

MJ:  Sound machine, if I had to choose one.

BT: Physical book or Kindle?

MJ: Kindle (iPad) only because I can carry so many books at one time that way.

BT: Before bed — read a book, watch a show or listen to a podcast?

MJ: Hands down, it is reading a book for me.
