According to the company, Christchurch, New Zealand-based John Marshall & Co. started its wool crimping operation for the Japanese futon market in the ’80s but shifted its focus to U.S. mattress makers, with whom the company has maintained a strong relationship up to the present day. Since purchasing John Marshall & Co. Ltd. in 1991, Crone dedicated himself to supporting woolgrowers and championing innovation in natural products. “His enthusiasm for wool was not just a business interest, but a calling that drove him to elevate the industry and create lasting impacts worldwide, including the United States,” the company stated in a news release. “More recently, with the establishment of his Wool Technologies Ltd. factory, he transformed his vision into reality, fostering a culture that celebrated craftsmanship and quality.”

Crone was more than a business leader, the release continued. “He was a kind-hearted mentor and a principled individual whose relationships with customers, suppliers and partners transcended the professional sphere. Many who had the privilege to work alongside him grew to regard him as a lifelong friend.”

Evi Brilleman, vice president of marketing and business development for Joma Wool USA, added: “I will always cherish the time with Peter on the road, and how we worked hard together to promote the Joma Wool brand, both coming from literally the opposite sides of the world. His commitment to delivering excellence and his promise to exceed expectations laid the foundation of John Marshall’s reputation, one built on a legacy of integrity and hard work.”

In his honor, John Marshall will remain focused on the manufacturing of valued wool products at John Marshall, particularly the Joma Wool range.

Crone prepared the companies for this next chapter, ensuring both businesses are guided by capable leadership. His eldest daughter, Tracey Tyler, will lead John Marshall & Co. with the support of her husband, Nicholas, while Richard Beere will continue to manage Wool Technologies.

“Under their stewardship, I am confident that our commitment to quality and service will remain unwavering, just as Peter would have envisioned,” Brilleman said.

The news release stated: “While we mourn the loss of an extraordinary man, we also celebrate the spirit and values that he imparted to us all. His legacy will forever guide us in our mission and fuel our commitment to transforming people’s lives with wool. We extend our deepest gratitude to each of you for your continued support and loyalty, which meant the world to Peter during his time with us.”
