HARTFORD, Connecticut – Independent mattress manufacturer Gold Bond is seeing record growth in mattress sales to higher education and prep schools for the Fall 2026 semester, serving institutions including Brown University, Wellesley College, Siena University, Long Island University, The Hotchkiss School and The Winchendon School.
The growth reflects a shift in the institutional bedding market as schools increasingly invest in higher-quality mattresses. Gone are the days when students simply settle for a paper-thin, flimsy dormitory mattress. Comfort, support, durability and long-term value are becoming increasingly important.
“Expectations for the residential college experience have changed significantly,” said Bob Naboicheck, CEO of Gold Bond Mattress. “Students are accustomed to sleeping on higher-quality mattresses at home, and families increasingly expect that same attention to comfort and quality when a student moves onto campus. Schools are recognizing that the mattress is an important part of the overall residential experience.”
Gold Bond’s dormitory mattresses are crafted using many of the same quality components found in the company’s traditional residential mattress collections. At the foundation is a durable, American-made Leggett & Platt edge-to-edge steel innerspring system, further
reinforced with additional steel edge guards around the perimeter for enhanced support and durability.
At the heart of the dormitory program is Gold Bond’s signature two-sided, flippable design, an increasingly uncommon construction that allows mattresses to be periodically flipped and rotated to distribute wear, maintain consistent performance and extend their useful life.
Inside each mattress, 100-percent American-grown cotton provides a natural, durable comfort layer that has been used in quality mattress construction for generations. Gold Bond also uses durable exterior coverings selected to withstand the repeated use, handling and cleaning associated with institutional environments.
Another key differentiator is Gold Bond’s flexible ordering and delivery model. Schools can order the quantities they actually need without being forced into unnecessary truckload minimums. Whether an institution needs 20 replacement mattresses, a box-truck quantity or multiple tractor-trailers for a major project, Gold Bond can accommodate the requirement. This flexibility allows schools to replace mattresses based on actual need rather than purchasing unnecessary inventory.
“We don’t believe the goal should be to build the cheapest mattress a university can buy. We want to build a mattress they have to replace less often,” said Skip Naboicheck, president of Gold Bond Mattress. “When you combine better materials, two-sided construction and flexible replacement quantities, the value goes far beyond the initial cost of the mattress.”
