ATLANTA, GA— When Posh+Lavish asked above-average income
consumers how they would distinguish high end furniture from mid-range
furniture or low-end furniture, they answered with three overwhelmingly similar
responses; first, it would be built by hand and not mass produced. Second, it
would use solid wood. And last, that it would have better craftsmanship design
details like dovetail joinery.
When Posh+Lavish asked the same question about mattresses, “how they would
distinguish high end mattresses from mid-range mattresses or low-end
mattresses,” the consumers answered as succinctly. The above average income
consumers said that high end mattresses would be (1) hand tufted, (2) use better
fillings, and be (3) soft to sleep on yet supportive and last a long time. When the
company asked high end consumers what a high-end mattress with these
features would cost, the range was centered around $3,000- $5,000.
The breakthrough came to Posh+Lavish when they realized that consumers
wanted hand tufted mattresses at price points considerably under $5000 even
though the industry generally sells them closer to $10,000 and much more. Hand
tufting was one of the highest design cues for a luxurious mattress for aboveaverage income consumers and there are only handfuls of hand tufted
mattresses available, and they are sold at price points two to three times higher
than the above average income consumer expects to pay.
“With that information,” said Kurt Ling, Principal at Posh+Lavish, “we set out to
build a new luxury collection. We were ready to think outside the box and
challenge ourselves in ways we never have before. We were ready to think about
these price points differently than we do and different than the industry does. We
had three design goals; a (1) hand tufted mattress, a (2) distinguishable high-end
component and (3) plush mattresses that would last a long time.”
Mattresses tufted by hand provide significant benefits above and beyond the

prevents the layers in the mattress from bunching developing valleys. The hand
