Australian Mattress Manufacturer A.H. Beard Enters Voluntary Administration

NEW RELEASE

Australian mattress manufacturer A.H. Beard has entered voluntary administration after more than 126 years in business, according to filings with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and reporting from Australian business media.

The family‑owned company appointed Peter Anthony Lucas and Damien Lee Hou Lau of P.A. Lucas & Co. as joint administrators in late April. Administrators confirmed the company intends to continue trading during the administration process while options for restructuring or sale are reviewed.

Founded in 1899 by Enoch William Beard, A.H. Beard began as the Australian Bedding Mill and grew into a premium mattress manufacturer operating across Australia and New Zealand, with distribution in select international markets. Over five generations of family ownership, the company produced and sold millions of mattresses and supplied products through major retail partners including Harvey Norman, Forty Winks, and Domayne.

According to company statements cited in media reports, the decision to enter administration followed several years of financial pressure driven by weaker discretionary consumer spending, rising manufacturing and energy costs, and increased competition from lower‑priced imported mattresses. Administrators noted that trading will continue while the company’s financial position is assessed.

At its peak, A.H. Beard operated multiple manufacturing facilities and employed several hundred people across Australia and New Zealand. Some operations have been affected as the administration process begins, though the full impact on staffing and facilities remains under review.

In recent years, A.H. Beard had invested in sustainability initiatives, including participation in mattress recycling programs and the development of products incorporating recyclable components and materials. Industry representatives in Australia described the company as a long‑standing participant in stewardship and sustainability efforts within the bedding sector.

Administrators have not yet announced whether A.H. Beard will be restructured, sold, or wound down. Further updates are expected as discussions with creditors and stakeholders continue and the administration process progresses.
