Nightcap Q&A With Taylor Jones

As the owner of Wishbone Advisory, a boutique e-commerce and marketing consultancy, Taylor Jones spends his days delivering business results while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for mattress brands. On his days off, you might find him playing tennis, watching sports, or enjoying the occasional craft beverage.

His favorite part of working in the mattress industry? It’s twofold: “Knowing I’m—in part—making a difference, helping people sleep and ultimately live better, and the relationships and great people in our industry,” he says.

BedTimes: What’s one thing you absolutely need for a good night’s sleep?

Taylor Jones: I’m 6’4” and a bigger guy, so a supportive memory foam pillow is a must.

BT: What’s your ideal bedtime, even if you don’t always hit it?

TJ: Around 10 p.m.—it’s been pretty consistent for me over the years.

BT: Pets in the bed—yea or nay?

TJ: Hard no for me. I have two senior French bulldogs—Poppyseed, 10, and Bean, 8—and while we love them so much, they snore and root around, so they’ve been officially banned from the bed.

BT: Barefoot or socks at bedtime?

TJ: Barefoot, always.

BT: What’s on your nightstand right now?

TJ: My phone, iPad, chargers, and a glass of water.

BT: What’s the best sleep product you own and why?

TJ: My memory foam mattress. Before working in this industry, I always slept on traditional coil mattresses, but memory foam has been a game-changer. It adapts to my body and provides much better support.

BT: What’s one thing you always pack to help you sleep away from home?

TJ: A clip to keep hotel curtains fully closed for a dark room, and I always make sure my go-to white noise app is downloaded.

BT: What’s the strangest or best place you’ve ever fallen asleep?

TJ: I’d say the most interesting place I’ve fallen asleep was in a canopy bed at Ladera (Resort) in St. Lucia, in a mountainside suite that was open air and exposed so you could see down to the beach. It was so beautiful and unique at the same time, as I would often wake up to a lizard eating breakfast or dinner on the mosquito net! But it was one of the best vacations I’ve been on and has been on Oprah’s Favorite Things.

BT: Do you break any traditional sleep “rules”?

TJ: Definitely the “no screens before bed” rule. I’ll read on Libby or check the news—probably not ideal, but it works for me. Do as I say, not as I do.

BT: Sleep mask or sound machine?

TJ: Sound machine.

BT: Cozy or cool?

TJ: Cool.

BT: Physical book or Kindle?

TJ: Kindle or iPad.

BT: Before bed: read, watch, or listen?

TJ: Read.

BT: What do you do if you can’t fall asleep?

TJ: Honestly, I’m pretty lucky—I don’t run into this issue often.
