According to the International Sleep Products Association’s May Bedding Barometer (paywall), a monthly sales report on the U.S. mattress industry, unit sales of mattresses and foundations increased 0.5% in May, as compared with the same month in 2013. The wholesale dollar value of those units grew 4.5% as compared with May 2013. The average unit selling price for mattresses and foundations increased 4% in May.
Year-to-date unit sales rose just 0.1% as compared with the prior-year period. Year-to-date wholesale dollar value of sales grew 3.8% and AUP increased 3.7%, as compared with the same period in 2013.
The Bedding Barometer reports U.S. sales activity (including Puerto Rico) for 14 U.S. mattress producers. The participating companies accounted for 70.1% of the mattress units shipped and 78.2% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2013. The experience of these participants as a group does not necessarily reflect those of the entire mattress manufacturing industry. Furthermore, comparisons of Bedding Barometer results for different time periods can be affected by a number of factors, including differences in the number of workdays and holiday promotions in a given month, weather conditions, non-reporting manufacturers entering or exiting the market and other variables.
