Calif. Bureau of Home Furnishings clarification: New FR labeling law does not apply to mattresses

New California FR labeling law for upholstered furniture does not apply to mattresses

California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law legislation that requires manufacturers of upholstered furniture, and other products that must meet the CA Technical Bulletin (TB) 117-2013 flammability standard, to label their products to disclose whether they contain added flame retardants. Several members of the International Sleep Products Association asked if the new law requires them to place new labels on mattresses.

The California Bureau of Electronic & Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings, & Thermal Insulation has addressed this question in a new document, “Senate Bill (SB) 1019 Frequently Asked Questions,” According to the document, the law does not apply to mattresses because mattresses do not have to meet TB 117-2013. This is consistent with ISPA’s earlier statements on this issue.
