Make time for discussion of mattress recycling in Vegas

If your schedule for next week’s Las Vegas Market looks anything like that of the BedTimes editorial team, you don’t have many slots free of appointments, meetings, showings, seminars and parties.

I hope that you’ve blocked out 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, for an important panel discussion on mattress recycling. If you haven’t, do what you can to rearrange your schedule to make sure you can attend.

The session—“Mattress Retailers and Manufacturers Beware: Are You Prepared for 50 Different State Used Mattress Recycling Laws?”—will provide information about various bills that state legislatures across the country are considering to regulate mattress recycling. Such state-by-state requirements would be inefficient and expensive for the entire mattress industry.

The panel discussion is sponsored by the International Sleep Products Association, which has proposed a more cost-effective, efficient national solution for mattress recycling.

The panel of speakers will represent manufacturers, retailers and recyclers, including Doug Guffey, president of Sleep Inc.; Barrie Brown, owner of Sleep: You Deserve More; and Joe Paviglianti, principal and co-founder of Spare Our Landfills. Daniel J. Connelly, executive director of the Product Management Alliance, will serve as the panel moderator. (For more information, check www.sleepproducts.org.)

All mattress manufacturers, retailers and industry suppliers are invited to attend the session, which will be in the World Forum on the 16th floor of Building B in the World Market Center.

I hope there will be a good turnout from all three groups—implementing a comprehensive solution to the problem of recycling used mattresses will require the entire industry to work together.

See you there.
