Mattress sales slip in February

U.S. mattress sales declined in February, as compared with the same month of the previous year, according to the latest Bedding Barometer (paywall), a monthly sales report published by the International Sleep Products Association. Unit sales decreased by 3.4% in February, while the wholesale dollar value of those units decreased by 0.9%. The average unit selling price increased by 2.5%  in February as compared with February of last year.

Year-to-date unit shipments and wholesale revenues have dipped slightly, by 1.2% and 0.5% respectively, as compared with the same period of 2013.

The Bedding Barometer reports U.S. sales activity (including Puerto Rico) for 14 U.S. mattress producers. The participating companies accounted for 70% of the mattress units shipped and 78.5% of the wholesale market revenue for mattresses sold in 2012.

The experience of these participants as a group does not necessarily reflect those of the entire mattress manufacturing industry. Furthermore, comparisons of Bedding Barometer results for different time periods can be affected by a number of factors, including differences in the number of workdays and holiday promotions in a given month, weather conditions, nonreporting manufacturers entering or exiting the market and other variables.
