NEWS RELEASE

Paving the way to a more sustainable world through advanced polyurethane technologies

Covestro to share polyurethanes expertise and debut new research results at Center for Polyurethanes Industry event

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 21, 2016 — With more than 75 years of experience in research and development of polyurethane technology, Covestro knows that superior polyurethane materials are the building blocks of exceptional products across a wide variety of industries. Covestro will demonstrate this expertise at the 59th annual Polyurethanes Technical Conference on Sept. 26-28 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Covestro experts will be onsite to debut new research, give technical presentations and teach courses as part of the Polyurethane Professional Development Program (PDP), and are slated to discuss a wide variety of topics, including the introduction of CO2-based polyols (polyethercarbonate-polyols) to the flexible foam market, best practices for aldehyde reduction in automotive seating and more. Below is a sneak peek of where you can find Covestro experts at the show:

  • On Sunday, September 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mike Jeffries, field technology service manager, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties, Covestro LLC, and Nigel Barksby, research fellow, Raw Materials Flexible Slabstock Applications Development Group, Covestro LLC, will focus on the chemistry behind polyurethanes in the PDP course titled “Polyurethane Chemistry (PU-101).” The course – which may be of interest to industry newcomers who are interested in a comprehensive overview of polyurethane chemistry, chemical ingredients, machinery, end products and markets – will provide an overview of polyurethane raw materials, typical testing parameters and polyurethane market applications. The instructors will also discuss application equipment, as well as the safe use and handling of chemicals.
  • Brian Neal, technical manager Flexible Molded Application Development, Covestro LLC, will present specific research findings in the presentation titled “Aldehyde Reduction in Automotive Seating” on Tuesday, September 27 during the Global Automotive VOC Specifications Part II session starting at 9 a.m. He will discuss Covestro’s latest polyurethane material advances that aim to improve Vehicle Indoor Air Quality (VIAQ) through the reduction of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde emissions in automotive seating.
  • For attendees who work in more specialized polyurethane fields, such as coatings adhesives, sealants and elastomers, Steven Reinstadtler, market manager – Construction Coatings, Adhesives, and Sealants, Covestro LLC, will lead a higher-level course on Tuesday, September 27 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The course, titled “Polyurethane Elastomers and Coatings (PU-104B),” will provide an in-depth analysis of polyurethane elastomers and coatings, including industry trends, application techniques, case studies and more.
  • Lutz Brassat, technical manager, Flexible Foam Application Development, Covestro Deutschland AG, will present the results of a paper titled “Final steps on the route to commercialization of CO2-based polyols for flexible foam” on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 9:30 a.m. during the Flexible Foam – Renewable Polyols session. Brassat will discuss recent progress in the development of polyethercarbonate-polyols, including the introduction of cardyonTM LC05 as a new raw material that is suitable for the production of flexible foam for typical slabstock foam applications. Additionally, he will cover topics such as the sustainability of CO2-based polyols as well as the physical and emission properties of conventional foams.

Conference attendees can also visit Covestro’s booth #2 and #3 to learn more about its polyurethane and polyurethane-based coatings raw materials and technologies.
