Better Sleep Month 2025: An Editor's View on Rest & Mattresses

Ah, May. The month of spring flowers (achoo!), crazy busy end of school schedules, graduations, weddings, international travel (hello, Interzum Cologne) and — better sleep?

Yes, May is Better Sleep Month. There’s a lot going on, and that makes it the perfect time to help people focus on the need for a great night’s rest. We all know that a solid night of sleep is so important. We want people to wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day. We also know that starts with a great mattress. May is the time to spread the word.

The Better Sleep Council has a fun ad campaign to promote the month. A superhero with mattresses on his back stands poised to fight all bad mattresses that come his way. The message: With the power of a quality mattress, you’ll conquer the night and wake up ready to save the day.

The BSC, which educates consumers on all things sleep related, has always talked about the need for restorative rest. But now the message is a little louder regarding the role a mattress plays in achieving that rest and reset. Yes, many factors play into getting a good night’s sleep. But if your mattress is uncomfortable, it doesn’t matter how much caffeine you avoid or how dark you make your bedroom. You will have a hard time sleeping through the night.

The BSC also conducts surveys that help the bedding industry understand consumers. This month, we have the first in a series of articles about consumers’ spending habits. Even if the news isn’t rosy (42% say they plan to cut back on nonessential spending), it’s helpful to know who is most likely to purchase a mattress in 2025, whether by age group or financial status. And let’s face it, purchasing a mattress can be essential spending — especially if the consumer isn’t sleeping well.

If you haven’t been on the BSC website in a while, this month is a good time to revisit BetterSleep.org and get reacquainted with all the resources it has to offer. The monthly blog has helpful topics of interest. Personally, I got a lot out of February’s “The Impact of Work-From-Home on Sleep Patterns.” Did you know the BSC launched a podcast in April? Called “Catching Zzzs,” it explores how sleep influences every aspect of life. In the inaugural episode, BSC representative Lissa Coffey and Mary Helen Rogers, vice president of marketing and communications for the International Sleep Products Association, discuss how stress affects sleep.

I hope this Better Sleep Month leads to peaceful nights and active, fulfilling days for you. Rest well!
