Poll: A quality mattress is critical for good sleep

A recent survey by Houston-based retailer Mattress Firm and bedding protection provider Protect-A-Bed in Wheeling, Ill., found that a majority of Americans—70%—believe a comfortable mattress is important to a good night’s sleep.

The two companies conducted the national online poll to find out more about consumers’ sleep habits and perceptions. The survey was undertaken in connection with the Better Sleep Council’s Better Sleep Month in May and asked 500 adults questions related to sleep habits, mattress comfort and other factors that influence sleep.

Other findings:

  • 74% said they choose a mattress based on comfort rather than appearance, brand or price.
  • More than 60% said the main reason they purchased a new mattress was because their existing mattress was no longer comfortable.
  • 70% of respondents indicated that the quality of their mattress affects their love life.
  • 90% of respondents said they are sore, tired and cranky after a bad night’s sleep.
  • More than one-third said they’ve had their current mattress for more than 10 years.
  • 20% of those surveyed said they think it’s OK to keep a mattress until they begin to suffer from back pain.
