Materials Management buys Legs Packaging

Materials Management Inc., a supplier of polypropylene mattress boots and bags based in Greenville, S.C., has acquired Cincinnati-based Legs Packaging Ltd., an importer of polypropylene mattress bags and boots. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Legs Packaging owner Leslie Leyland will serve as a consultant to Materials Management.

Materials Management has specialized in servicing large mattress producers, while Legs has focused on a base of smaller-volume customers in smaller markets, said Materials Management’s Austin Jones.

“Our focus going forward is on the moms-and-pops to provide them with the good pricing and service that they can’t get anywhere else,” Jones said.

Materials Management plans to continue importing boots and bags, but has manufacturing capabilities at its South Carolina facility—an advantage it promotes to customers, Jones says.

“Historically we had been a manufacturer of woven polypropylene,” Jones said. “When the market shifted from manufacturing to importing, we kept the manufacturing facility running so that if something happens with our imported products we can still provide stock to our customers.”

The mattress industry—primarily mattress manufacturers and some retailers—represents 35% to 40% of Materials Management’s annual sales, Jones said. The company also sells into the lumber, textile and other industries.
