Jersey Shore Steel wins Pa. Governor’s Award, international recognition

Jersey Shore Steel logoJersey Shore Steel, based in Jersey Shore, Pa., has earned the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s 2013 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. The rerolled steel producer also was named a finalist in the Platts 2013 Global Metals Awards in two categories—industry leadership and technology innovation. Platts, which is owned by McGraw-Hill, is a publisher covering the energy, metals and petrochemical sectors.

According to the Pennsylvania DEA, the Governor’s Award is the “highest statewide honor bestowed upon businesses and organizations for environmental performance and innovation (highlighting) the best in environmental innovation and expertise.”

As a Platts finalist, Jersey Shore Steel is on a short list that includes Alcoa, ArcelorMittal, Nucor, Severstal and other leading metals producers around the world. Winners will be announced at a London gala on May 23.

In a news release, Jersey Shore attributed the award and recognition to the company’s long-term process of “greening” its operations, as well as its recent efforts to educate consumer and industrial markets about the merits of “green steel.” The company is the first steel mill in the world to have a negative carbon footprint, as documented by the Pennsylvania State University.

“Significant credit for this recognition belongs to the successful relationships we have with our employees, customers, suppliers, legislators—all of you who have supported our efforts to make and market the ‘World’s Greenest Steel’,” said Thomas Tillman, Jersey Shore Steel vice president of sales.
